“All who wander are not lost.”

For those who are travelers, those that look for direction, or those that are lost – the compass rose is symbolic of direction – be that actual or metaphorical.

Description

HISTORY:

The compass rose is an old design element found on compasses, maps and even monuments (e.g. the Tower of the Winds in Athens, the pavement in Dougga, Tunis, during Roman times) to show cardinal directions and frequently intermediate direction. The “rose” term arises from the fairly ornate figures used with early compasses. Older sources sometimes use the term “compass star”, or stella maris (“star of the sea”), to refer to the compass rose.  Early forms of the compass rose were known as wind roses, since no differentiation was made between a directional point and the wind which emanated from that direction. (Today, the term “wind rose” is often reserved for the object used by meteorologists to depict wind frequencies from different directions at a location.

ABOUT THE PENDANT:

This pendant is made with a wax seal of a compass rose of unknown origins, stamped into fine pure copper.

Each pendant is stamped, sanded, polished and oxidized for an antique look. Because they are hand-stamped individually and made to order, these pendants are truly unique, and no two pendants are the same (unlike pendants cast from a mold).

DIMENSIONS:  The pendant is approximately 1.5″ across.

This listing is for the PENDANT ONLY and does not necessarily include the chain.

CHAIN LENGTH: If you choose to purchase the pendant on a chain, the chain is sterling silver or pure copper, 16″ or 18″ long.
